I’d lost track of time but guessed we woke hours later. Beneath the sea, time didn’t exist. No sun or moon or day or night. It was as I were on another planet.

Aby raised the top of the shell and I noticed the color of the walls had changed.

“The walls are covered in extracts from fluorescent ocean plants. As the room’s temperature changes so does the color and pigment of the room.” She climbed from bed poured us drink. She brought it back and swore it was the best thing I ever had.

“You’ve enjoyed so far?”

I nodded. “But I think I’ll need more convincing to make a decision.” Since she had the ability to read my mind there was no need to hide anything. Swim around in the water, no stress or pressures of the world? Who wouldn’t want that change?” But I’d spent a lifetime trying to hone my baseball skills. I’d moved to elite status, and a very large contract. I had the world in the palm of my hand and she wanted me to return it.

We finished our drinks and I followed Aby back to the main cavern where people were hurriedly preparing for meal. The table held a variety of raw and cooked fish and plants. None of it looked appetizing to a man who’d been living off burgers, steaks and pizza. Aby and I sat next to her father. Sebastian sat across from me.

“Aby has requested we allow you to live among our race,” the king said.

I looked down the full table and then at Sebastian. The others ignored me. Sebastian wanted to send me to the sharks.

I placed my hand on Aby’s leg and squeezed.

“If he’s going to be living among our people, he needs to understand our ways and take care of community,” Sebastian said. Nothing good was going to come from the man.

Aby started to protest but her father raised his hand. “Sebastian is right. Seth needs to prove he is capable of living among us.” He turned to me. “After meal, you’ll joining Sebastian and the others. They will show you the way we live.”

We spent the entire meal discussing the world above and the land dwellers, myself included. I tried to explain baseball and received odd looks in exchange. Except for Sebastian. He went a step further and told me it sounded like a foolish game. I asked if he were more interested in synchronized swimming and he only stared.

After meal, naked like everyone else, I followed Sebastian and two other men to the lagoon I’d originally come from.

We dove into the water and I followed the three mermen, occasionally glancing back at my moving fin. We swam into a tunnel and stopped. Sebastian ordered the two men to follow one passage, he and I would follow another.

Moments later, Sebastian and I broke the water’s surface and found ourselves in a small cavern no large than a house. I followed him out of the water.

“She belongs to me,” Sebastian said. “I don’t care what her or the king believe.
